Beautiful salon, great service, and my best haircut! Both times I have been to Bibi I have been very happy. Maisha is personable, remembered who I was, and was easy to talk to. I am caucasion and my sister in law is African American and we both agreed that she gave us our best haircuts yet. Plus we had tea, crackers and cheese, good conversation, and beautiful artwork to look at. Worth the money.

I have been going to Bibi Salon since April 2011, and I have been pleased every time. I can honestly say that my hair is SO MUCH healthier because of Maisha and the Phyto products she uses. The salon is clean and the staff is friendly. The only thing I don't look forward to is the occassional wait time, but I'd like to think that's because Maisha really takes her time consulting with her clients and catering to their needs, which I greatly appreciate. She is very knowledgeable about the products and makes you feel as though she has your best interest when it comes to the healthy maintenance of your hair. What more could a girl ask for!!!!!

I love how my hair looks and feels since I started going to Bibi Salon about six months ago. Maisha's knowledge of natural hair is impressive, by far better than any other stylist I've used in the past. She introduced me to new products that are perfect for my hair. I get color treatment every 6 to 8 weeks and have received so many compliments.

Plus the decor and atmosphere are great!

I love this place. I've been going there regularly for a few months and at this point, I refuse to go anyplace else. I've had relaxers, cut, wash & style and eyelash extensions. I've never been kept waiting more than a few minutes, and I love that I'm always offered an alcoholic beverage, even when I book a morning appointment! Also the place is super-clean and the staff is friendly.

The best thing about this place is Maisha, the owner. She's really committed to using quality products (Phyto mostly) and she's incredibly knowledgeable. I always leave there feeling like my hair is bouncy and polished, and without a doubt it's healthier now than it was a few months ago... and I've been getting lots of complements on my haircut.

I probably would not get the eyelashes again, just because I didn't really enjoy the experience and it was pricey (but they did look great)!

I live in the neighborhood, so I'm super happy to have this place. Highly recommend it!

I went to Bibi Salon for the first time back in March. I recently moved to the east coast from the midwest, so I decided to give the salon a try after seeing a write up in Essence magazine.

My likes:
Confirmation text message at least two days before your appointment;

Wait time or lack of wait time to get started with your services after you arrive for your appointment;

Location and staff

Both the salon and staff are very professional. I believe they are focused on quality hair care, which is a must for me. I am pretty conservative with my hair, so I mainly look for someone that is in the business of taking care of hair. I was pleased with my first visit and I have been back for 2 additional appointments.

Bibi
the salon with the very best service and atmosphere to enjoy (die for). My time spent in Bibi is the most relaxing and when through Miesha makes sure I am totally satisfied. I look 100% magnificent. Yet, the best is that I can maintain my hair style and be the foxy lady that she helped create each day.

Quality hair care. A little pricier than other options, but Maisha's knowledge and skill are well worth it. You do, indeed, get what you pay for.

This is my third time at Bibi Salon. Maisha totally transformed my hair, which was brassy and frizzy when I first arrived into a really hip, shiny, healthy hairdo, with a style and color that totally brings my personality out
and compliments my career as a touring musician, both on stage and off.
The atmosphere is modern, extremely clean, and drinks and snacks are offered non-stop. Cool pulse of house music makes it chic and the friendly chatter amongst the clients and staff give me that warm neighborhood feeling. I'm lucky to have Bibi Salon so close to home

I bought the $48 deal from LivingSocial and could not be more pleasantly surprised by how it turned out. I really just did it because my ends were falling off (like, literally falling into little bits on my pillowcase, in the shower, every day life, etc, etc.). Wasn't expecting a fantastic haircut - I just wanted to try something new. I did not want to get my hair fried by the cheap products and mega-hot blowdryers at the Dominican salon (where they have blown my curly hair silky straight but never really given me a good haircut that works when I wear my hair curly). And I did not want to pay the hefty price at Ouidad (a fantastic but expensive place).

Maisha, though, gave me a fantastic cut! I knew she knew her stuff because as I was getting my hot oil Phyto treatment, she gave a little white baby his first hair cut, gave a grown white man a fantastic cut (and she spent a lot of time getting it right. Who knew men's cuts actually took time and talent?), and she gave a black woman wonderful hydrated curls. I point out ethnicities so you can see her range with hair textures.

Anyway, as for my cut - wow. People of all ethnicities, white, black , latino - noticed and actually commented on how great my hair looked. First time this has ever happened to me. My curls were perfectly layered and when I asked to see it straight, she blew it out and flat ironed it, leaving me with phenomenal, magazine chick volume.

I saw what the services cost without my deal and yes, I would pay full-price gladly. You're getting a fantastic haircut with actual quality products - no cheap shampoos or shady styling products. Those Phyto products she uses are not cheap!

And dammit, if I can spend that money having drinks with boring people, I sure as hell can spend it taking good care of myself. As a plus, while I was there, at least 4 random neighborhood people stopped by to just say hi to Maisha. Who does that in NYC?! Says great things about her and her salon. Oh, and you can get water/wine and fruit, and zero attitude while waiting. Very, very nice.

A wonderful salon, great service, the nicest warmest environment. But to top it off!! Maisha really knows how to cut hair! and color too! I have had 2 cuts there and both were best I've had in years. So glad I do not have to go downtown to get a great cut!

Having moved to the neighborhood only in October of
2010, I am still in the process of finding my go to places in the area. So walking back home from my weekly grocery trips to Best Yet supermarket I noticed BiBi and decided to give it a go. Yes, the prices aren't cheap but then again this isn't Supercuts and I soon found out that you get what you pay for.

My hair is hard to cut, not simply because it's thick, straight and unforgiving but it grows in the most random directions. At one time I was content to pay $12 dollars at a barber to get a #6 on the sides and a trim on top - later having to use a pint of gel just to get it to not stick up in odd places all over my head. No more!

Maisha knows her stuff. She used scissors the whole way (a true sign of a competent and skilled hairdresser) and cut my hair just the right amount in all the right places. My hair now looks great even without any product!

I'm thrilled that I can walk down the street 2 blocks to my salon.

Maisha, I'm glad to have found you.

Though I have not visited or patronized this establishment, I have a complaint. I received a Bibi Salon gift certificate valued at $50 on Monday, February 14th that had an expiration date of Thursday, March 31st. To be honest, I completely forgot about the certificate and came across it on Monday, March 28th, just a few days before it expired. I immediately logged onto Bibi's website to discern what service I would like to have and proceeded to call to make an appointment for a Brown Sugar Pedicure ($60). To my dismay, I learned that Bibi Salon is closed from Sunday through Wednesday and I would have to wait until Thursday morning (the 31st) to make an appointment.

Bibi's opens at 10am so I waited until shortly after 11am today to call the salon and attempt to schedule an appointment. I explained to the courteous young lady on the phone, Soleil (sp?), that I held a gift certificate that was scheduled to expire today and my desire to schedule an appointment. Soleil explained that they were totally booked. I then asked if I could be squeezed in at all and Soleil asked if I could come in tomorrow (Friday, April 1st). I replied, "Yes, I can gladly come in tomorrow however will my gift certificate be honored despite its expiration date?" Soleil stated that she was not sure if it would be honored but that she would ask the owner and call me back within 20 minutes. I happily gave her my name and phone number, and thanked her for her assistance. Two hours later and still no call from Soleil.

At 1:15pm, I phoned the salon again. I stated my name and recounted the conversation from earlier. Soleil replied, "Oh yes, I have not had a chance to speak to the owner yet and that is why I have not called you back." Hmmm... I thought to myself, "It would have been nice of you to call me back within the 20 minutes to at least inform me of the difficulties she was having with reaching the owner, etc." Isn't that Customer Service 101? Anyway, I digress. I expressed my concern about the hour of the day and the likelihood that I would secure an appointment today or tomorrow for that matter as Soleil suggested. Soleil replied, "Hold on a moment. Let me see if I can ask someone else." I replied, "Not a problem; thank you." Soleil returned to the line and stated that my gift certificate was issued two months ago, that the salon is booked today, and that there are other promotions that "kick-in" tomorrow and therefore my gift certificate could not be honored tomorrow either. I asked from whom she was given this information and she said, "the owner." I thanked Soleil and hung up, unhappily so. Funny how the owner was now available to answer the question. (??) Didn't she just say she was going to ask someone else? Hmmm...

In my head, I recanted my conversation with her and thought to myself, "Two months?! I just received the gift certificate on February 14th, only six weeks ago!" Dissatisfied with the situation and still wanting to redeem my gift certificate for a Brown Sugar Pedicure, I phoned Soleil yet again. I said, "Hi Soleil, this is Miss Collins once again. I just wanted to say that the gift certificate was issued less than two months ago on February 14th to be exact and that I really don't want it to go to waste. Are you certain that there is no way I can be squeezed in this afternoon?" Salon told me that there are no more hair appointments available today. I quickly replied, "Oh, I don't want my hair done. I would like a Brown Sugar Pedicure." Soleil replied, "Oh, I thought you wanted your hair done. Let me see if there are any appointments. Mmmm...can you come it at 4pm?" I asked if she had any availability for a bit later, say around 5pm and Soleil replied, "Oh. The gift certificate is redeemable only for hair services." What? Is she serious? I searched the gift certificate for any fine print that dictated which services could be redeemed or applicable restrictions and there were none listed! I told Soleil, "I'm looking over the gift certificate now, front and back, and I don't see any restrictions or specifications for hair services only." She replied, "Yeah. It's only for hair services." I again thanked Soleil and hung up, shaking my head.

Here are my issues:
- The receptionist did not call me back in a timely fashion, and was not equipped to answer questions.
- The owner isn't available to answer customer inquiries and has not designated someone to answer any inquiries in her stead.
- The gift certificate, which I received from a fundraising luncheon, was flawed because it did not list exceptions to its redemption.

Overall, I'm not impressed with Bibi Salon. Their website suggests professionalism and sophistication; like they have themselves together! Too bad my first encounter with and impression of them is anything but. I'm about to call the Korean nail salon in The Bronx where they know my name and will pamper my feet for less than $30!

I have been natural for more than five years now so my curl pattern is pretty well defined. Every now and then, I want to wear it straight for a different look. Well, needless to say, Maisha worked wonders on my hair. It was shiny, soft and full of body. Maisha is not only into good looking hair but healthy hair.....which is very important for someone like me who tends to have dry hair. She used Phyto Specific products on my hair which is great for people with natural textures. I highly recommend Maisha and Bibi Salon for anyone who wants professional service as well as healthy and beautiful hair. It doesn't get much better than this!

Honestly, I think the lead stylist here is more suitable for the conservative, professional woman looking for a simple, manageable style. I went here, with reference pic in hand to get a haircut. My end result was nothing like I wanted and my hair looked as dull, dry and a complete mess! After paying $160 for a wash/cut/style by a celebrity stylist, I was expecting my hair to look flawless. Needless to say I wont be back & its a shame that I cant find a good stylist in Harlem that shares my vision at a reasonable price. Other than that the place & staff are professional and you wont be there all day for your service.

After giving birth to my son, I needed something to help me get my mojo back. My once stylish Oprah / News Anchor hair do had turned into a hair don't, making me look too dated, as I sported my new baby around town.

So, when I heard that Maisha Stephens-Teacher would be freelancing in DC for a day, I jumped at the chance to get her expert opinion about suitable styles. OMG, what I received was so much more...she used her skills and vision to give me the most elegant bob hair cut ever. Almost on a daily basis someone is complementing my hair or asking who my stylist is. In fact, I've had to keep a notebook just for the purpose of taking folk contact information, to pass onto Maisha when she's freelancing in DC.

Needless to say, I love my hair and travel on a regular basis to NYC, Philly, or wherever Maisha is doing her magic. Thanks to her, along with my new look, I got a new attitude and much of my swagga back. I'm one Hot Mama and a Bibi Salon loyalist.

I've been a client of Maisha's for YEARS and I must say, she just gets better and better.

First, to comment on Tendai's review, if you didn't use Maisha's actual name, I would think you were talking about the wrong salon...for real! Maisha is a HUGE advocate of natural hair; she even wears her own hair natural. If you're a new client and you use a relaxer to straighten your hair, she's going to try to talk you into growing it out. I've overheard that convo plenty of times! So, if Maisha suggested texturizing your hair, I'm going to assume it was for a really good reason. She's the reason why I no longer use chemicals to relax my hair. I was scared to wear my straight styles without a relaxer but I've now been without for four years and my hair is so much healthier, thanks to Maisha.

I cannot change your experience; everyone has a different personal standard. I'm just saying, I know for a fact that Maisha is a strong advocate for natural hair and has always worn her hair natural (meaning, without a relaxer). She HAS recommended a texturizer to me in the past, back when I wore my hair in a short natural, because I complained about my curl pattern being inconsistent. My hair seems to have a bunch of different textures (left side kind of straight and the right really curly) so she suggested texturizing to even out the curl pattern. I tried the Phyto texturizer and it seemed to be very gentle but I just wasn't a fan of the look, so I began to wear straight styles (blow dry and curl).

I also wanted to touch on the comment you made about the salon not having style books. Uhhh....I'm not sure if she has actual magazines exclusive to hair styles (I haven't paid enough attention) but there are TONS of women's magazines in that salon. A TON! Essence is far from the only magazine. I was just there last weekend and I browsed through about 10 different women's magazines/books. That's nothing new; they've always had a selection of women's magazines, many having fashion and hair sections. Again, I can't speak to your personal standard but I've never judged a salon on whether they had style books. I usually have an idea of what I want to do with my own hair, even if I can't articulate it well.

Maisha is not for everyone, I suppose; definitely not the finicky. But your friend highly recommended her, so...

MY experience at Bibi has been nothing short of exceptional, each and every time. In comparison to other salons I've frequented, it's quiet, clean, sophisticated and the staff is professional. It's not a spot with people coming in and out selling DVDs, folks talking loud and the staff gossiping about clients. It's a very relaxing atmosphere. I've always been willing to pay Maisha's prices for the high-quality service and the environment. I've met some really great women there, and I've done a good deal of networking with her clientele, wherever she's worked. And again, my hair is healthier than ever! When I begged for her to "get it straighter" she would tell me "no" and now I'm glad she did because it's no longer overprocessed and thinned out. It's full, healthy and shiny!

Overall, I'd highly recommend Bibi Salon to all hair types.

Finally a Salon that has Styled me Happy !

I Love ,Love ,Love my texturized tresses ,Maisha is professional, supremely talented and so obviously loves what she does.
Maisha was interested in what I expected and wanted , answered my questions and explained everything. I was greeted warmly upon my arrival and felt right at home .No stuffy attitudes at this Salon. Maisha schooled me on how to care for my hair style between appointments and offered product recommendations . I also had my eye brows shaped ,Maisha used tweezers giving my brows a soft natural look .
Well worth the trip from Philly !!!

Ladies Bibi Salon NYC is awesome!!!! I have been to every salon in Manhattan. Upper East side, Upper West Side, Brooklyn, including your local Dominican salon!!! I have tried it all, and the Bibi Salon experience was the best ! I have 2 beautiful little daughters, they arrived at Bibi Salon with dried damaged hair, and they left with beautiful hair. My daughters have had relaxers, keratin treatment, which as you know result in dry damaged hair! After a consultation and her recommendations, my girls have never had hair look as shiny, healthy, and bouncy!!!! My mother ( Who is Dominican born and raised) thought they had a relaxer! I actually cried when I saw the results!! My girls have found their stylist! And now I am looking forward to my personal consultation and appointment with Ms. Bibi. xoxo

Before coming to Bibi I always struggled with finding someone that styled well and believed in great hair care. I was often left with great looking OVERPROCESSED hair. After a couple visits to Bibi-no more!

I would follow Maisha to the ends of the earth to continue being her client.
I recommend this salon and lead stylist Maisha to my friends, enemies, and strangers!

I am sooo pleased to finally have a full service mulit cultural salon in Harlem.
It is such a pleasant surprise.

It is centrally located with access to all trains just up the block on 125th street. Parking is easy too!

Bibi salon is quietly tucked away on a busy block on Frederick Douglass.
Its a store front, that at first glance is very unassuming..but as soon as you walk up on the big clear window in the front..you feel something different!
When you walk in..you are immediately taken by the brightly lit space and inviting atmosphere.
The staff is quick to greet you with a friendly smile and warm hello.
They take your coat..and offer you something to drink..
Water, Juice, wine or champagne!
Which depending on your mood..is QUITE NICE these days!
(they also have very yummy lil snacks from time to time that are helpful when you ran to make your appt. and you havent eaten anything!)

The staff ushers you to the restroom so that you can change..out of your clothes and into a robe. Very helpful..your clothes do not get wet..nor run the risk of stains from chemicals or color!

The head stylist and Owner Maisha is quiet, honest, helpful and fun.
She goes over what she will be doing step by step..and explains the products she uses..which is Phyto.
She answers all your questions..and doesnt seem to get frustrated or bothered by how many you have..( I ask alot of questions!)
She is primarlily concerned with healthy hair and thats always a plus.

My experiences at Bibi..have been everything you would want a salon experience to be..pleasant, relaxing and fun!

I have yet to leave there feeling anything but FABULOUS!!!!
Go and give BiBi Salon a shot!

I definitely enjoyed my experience at Bibi Salon. When I went for my appt, I was only expecting a wash and blow dry but ended up getting a treatment as well as a cut from Maisha, the Senior Stylist. I was so impressed with the welcome and service I received. When I entered I was greeted nicely and offered some snacks as well as a glass of champagne or wine. I gladly accepted and began the beauty process. After my hair was shampooed, and the treatment was completed, Maisha proceeded to give me a cut that left my ends looking crisp and fresh. I have since returned and plan to go again. The service, cleanliness, and calming atmosphere are just added incentives. Not to mention, it's within walking distance to my home. Can't beat that!

All I can say is Maisha is a miracle worker. I came to her with damaged over processed hair and from the first day my hair was transformed. She knows her craft and is passionate about it! The place is immaculate. I've been going to her every few weeks ever since. I must also mention Desiree who is great. Try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
And the photo products are fantastic! I threw away all of my Mizani relaxer after using phytospecific.

I couldn't say enough great things. Met Maisha for a hair consultation and she diagnosed my haor in 15 minutes. I am one of the few women who genuinly dislike going to the hair salon. Especially when there is no time frame for when you will be done! BIBI is completely different from anyother salon I have been to. Its intimacy makes the process fluent - the Junior stylist is adorable! I cut my hair into a bob and it looks amazing! I now look forward to getting my hair done.

I moved to NYC last winter and continued to travel home every weekend to get my hair done. A coworker suggested Bibi Salon to me shortly after it opened. I was excited to try them out since I live and work in Harlem and had not found a hairdress here that used the products or offered the services I was used to. The salon is gorgeous with a very clean and chic aesthetic. I found the customer service to be beyond expectations and the staff to be knowledgeable. I love the fact that is phyto salon! Maisha is a top notch stylist that understands all different hair types. I am not only happy with the style of my hair, but also, the improved condition of it. Bibi Salon and the staff are truly a treasure for Harlem and New City.

I need to write an update because I have continued to go to Bibi Saloon. A couple of really awesome things about the salon.

    1) They have special events on occasion i.e. beauty consultations, Phyto days, etc.
    2) They now have an online booking system which makes life so much easier!
    3) The staff is AMAZING. All of the ladies are wonderful and I always feel at home when I am here.

I will not lie to you, an appointment here will put a dent in your pocketbook but heck...you work girl, so you deserve to treat and take care of yourself, right?!? :)

Sorry have to say it but these people run on CPT, I had a 11am appt and was seen at 3!!!!!!!!!!! Bought a deal on living social and decided to give them a try as I live in the neighborhood. First off it was for a cut, blow dry and conditioning treatment with take home products. I have long thick hair and sorry but I have a rule never let a bald hair dresser cut my hair so I skipped the cut, the wash was AMAZING and the place itself is cozy to say the least. Overall I wasn't really wowed and didn't receive the star treatment other have described of this place.
And I didnt even receive my "take home" products as was advertised.

The Good--my appointment time was honored and i didnt have to sit around all day waiting. yay for punctuality in a black salon! you go girls!!

The Better--they offered me complimentary mimosas like every 3-5 minutes. I hate sobriety. I love mimosas....ergo i love Bibi Salon.

The Bad (which may actually be good for some)--I called a couple days prior to see if it'd be ok for me to bring my 1 year old daughter and whoever I spoke with said it'd be fine. Once I got there, the stylist (Danine) said kids arent actually allowed but it'd be ok since I had called and asked first. My daughter sat in my lap and behaved so we didnt have a problem. They do, however, style/cut kids' hair.

The "say what now"--I paid $48 for wash, cut & conditioning via living social but the actual price would have been a whopping $185. I know this because the receptionist was so kind to print out a receipt for my viewing pleasure. At first I didnt know what the receipt was for since I had a voucher to cover my visit but then when I looked at it I realized she was trying to give me some insight before I booked a follow up appt at full price. So while I enjoyed my visit to Bibi I cant afford for it to be anything more than a one time fling.

The actual point--my hair does look cute and healthy and whatnot but no more or less than it would with any other less expensive salon. I do, however, wish the salon well and appreciated their kindness, timeliness, cute decor and endless mimosas.

So a friend suggested this salon to me. She said that the owner Maisha really knows how to do hair! I'm natural so I asked my friend any type of hair she said "yes, that she has seen people with natural hair there before and Maisha did a good job" So I called and inquired about them being able to do natural hair and the assistant said "oh yes we do" Okay good I booked an appointment after reading previous yelp reviews. So I went yesterday. (drum roll) Her assistant a really nice young lady offered me a beverage of my choice and asked me to change into a robe so my clothes would not get wet (nice touch) I asked Maisha if they had any books with styles that I could look at so I would be able to get an idea of what i wanted. Red flag #1 "No" we just have essence... Red flag #2 she had no suggestions, except for "Do you want to straighten it" The answer to that would be no. So I'm sitting there racking my brain to see what I can think of. So I think maybe an updo with braids on the side and twisted on the ends. I ask for a coffee which was good and I get my hair washed and conditioned and sit under a steam treatment with a warm towel wrapped around my head. Once I'm rinsed out I'm sitting in the chair and I think to my self "keep it simple" so I say to her I'm just going to get a wash and Go... She ask's me what I normally use I say any Gel is fine ( I figure wash and go is the easiest thing to do) She's playing in my hair putting some phyto moisture product that did not define my natural curls!! all the while telling me I would be a good candidate for a texturizer WTF..... Ok so I go under dryer for 15-20 mins to dry and then her assistant puts a gloss over it. My hair had no curl and looked a hot mess. She charged me $75!!! with a straight face. I just feel that if all you know how to do well for natural hair is straighten it or do two strand twist then you should advertise that, be up front. She was very nice and so was her assistant but I'm beyond pissed!!!, so much so that I think I have to call and speak to her to tell her how dissatisfied I am. If you are natural think long and hard before you go here!!! So here's an update I called and complained and Maisha refunded me $50 dollars... and then proceeded to tell me to definitely come in and get a texturizer....WTF

    Update - 6/2/2011

Worst cut I've ever had here. I had to go to another salon to get it re-cut and the stylist was appalled at how bad the cut was! The prices at this salon are WAY too high for nonsense like that!
